Meet Dr. Goodman

Not just adding years to your life – adding life to your years

Dr. GoodmanDr. Goodman was educated in Michigan at Kalamazoo College and Wayne State University School of Medicine. He moved to California in 1968 to finish his training in the San Francisco Bay area. He is the proud and happy father of 4 children, Gabriele, Lauren David, Caleb and Samuel.

After residency training at Stanford University and a short time with Kaiser in the Bay Area, Dr. Goodman moved to the Mendocino Coast in 1973 to become the first OB-GYN on the North Coast between Sonoma and Eureka. He moved with his family from Mendocino to Davis, CA., a small University town located between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, in 2000

Dr. Goodman likes to spend his free time gardening, playing tennis and basketball, listening to and playing music, writing, and hanging out with his family.

  • Hospital Consultant and Locum Tenens physician: High risk hospital-based OB, practice management, clinic-based OB-GYN and menopausal medicine for Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser), Sutter Health, East Bay Perinatal Medical Associates, and others; 1989-2006

V. Teaching Activities and Publications:

Dr. Goodman has been a clinical instructor in the Department of Family Practice, UC Davis and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UCSF. In this capacity he has been a proctor for nurse midwifery and nurse practitioner students and family practice residents, in addition to his experience teaching advanced operative laparoscopy.

Dr. Goodman has presented numerous papers at hospital training sessions and clinical meetings on menopause and hormone replacement therapy, vaginitis, advanced operative laparoscopy, pelvic ultrasound, pelvic pain and risk management. He has published papers on obstetrical care, nurse-monitrices, advanced laparoscopy, risk management, recovery and sexuality issues surrounding hysterectomy and UAE, and Vulvo-Vaginal Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery.  He is the lead author of a large, multi-center outcome study on VulvoVaginal Aesthetic surgery, presently in preparation.  Dr. Goodman presents frequently at Women's Health Seminars in California and elsewhere and has written 3 popular books about menopause and midlife transitions, the last two, "The Midlife Bible- A Woman's Survival Guide," and "MEN-opause: The Book for Men," published in 2007.

Recent Professional Activities

Dr. Goodman was invited to give Grand Rounds at Sutter Hospital in Davis, Ca in October. His topic was "Transdermal (Bioidentical) Hormone Therapy".

Dr. Goodman presented the paper "Is There Any Place for Oral Hormone Therapy? The Case for Transdermals as of 2009" at the 2009 meeting of the "North American Menopause Society" in San Diego, Ca in October.

Dr. Goodman is an invited speaker at the "First World Congress of Cosmetic Vaginal Surgery" at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery annual meeting in Orlando, FL January 26, 2010. His topics are "Sexual Counselling for Women Undergoing Vaginoplasty" and "Ethical, Patient Protection, and Training Issues for Pysicians Performing Female Genital Plastic Surgery".

Dr. Goodman has been invited to be on the Faculty of the Annual Meeting of ISSWSH, the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health, in St. Petersburg, FL, February 2010. He will participate in the "Great Debate" and will present his paper "Female Genital Plastic Surgery: a Large Multi-Centered Outcome Study".

Dr. Goodman's research paper "Female Genital Plastic Surgery: a Large Multi-Centered Outcome Study" will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Dr. Goodman was the senior author of two recently published peer-reviewed menical journal articles, "Is Elective Plastic Surgery Ever Warranted, and What Screening Should be Conducted Preoperatively," published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine,  (2007;4:269-276) and  "Female Cosmetic Genital Surgery," published in the journal, Obstetrics and Gynecology (2009;113: 156-159). 

The first chapter in a U. S. textbook on female genital aesthetic surgery, "Female Genital Plastic Surgery"  authored by Dr. Goodman, will be published in the new text, "Female Reproductive and Sexual Medicine" due out Fall, 2009.
